The mazda early rotary engines and even through the 80s were 100 percent unreliable and had serious issues so bad you can buy a rotary case converted into a fish tank now days. (you go mazda). Lets also point out a mazda has never won a major road race in the world and it being the most raced car in the world I serouisly doubt that, when you consider how many magazines are Dedicated to the mustang in drag racen , Grand AM, Scca, etc etc, only time a mazda races is at mazda race way and racen other mazdas. Though the RX8 in its self isnt impressive slower than GXP solstice or sky, Mustang gt, SS montecarlo , SS Impala . Also note the RX8 runs on high octane fuel and gets worse mpg than the V8s are getting and also note these are in full body cars not compact light weight car. Is there any wonder why Ford owns Mazda...

n/a rotaries are actually extremely reliable and were known for it all thru the 70's and 80's.  the turbo cars were another story; SCC did a story about 5 years back on some of the FC's design shortcomings when it came to durability for the turbocharged 13B's, most of which were things like a smaller radiator used in the interest of weight savings.

OH CAR AND DRIVER DID A ARTICLE A FEW YEARS BACK I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT, CALLED THE STREET TUNER CHALLANGE. It had the best compact tuners in the world assemble cars and all were side by side tested to find out who was best handeling etc. Then they compared that to a bone stock 40 thousand dollar corvette and found out the corvette lap times were 1.5 seconds faster stock new with warranty. Note the WRX sti is a 30 thousand dollar car 10 grand more corvette better handeling and faster.

That Corvette was a $55 grand Z06. I have been reading CD longer than SCC.

Even still, give me $40 grand, I'll give you an 03 Evo that will be faster in any fashion than an 03 Z06.

Give me the $70 grand needed for a new Z06, and I'll beat a new ZR-1 with that used Ariel Atom I saw in AutoWeek. $60 grand for the car, and another $10 thou for coilovers and an ECU reflash for the Ecotech.

American companies have made some truly remarkable cars, but today, except for a few select names (Corvette, Mustang), they are useless compared to their faster, more economical, and more refined "Ferrin' Cars".  

THE Lemans series goes like this: Prototype class, GT1, GT2 , GT . So the slowest class that no one realy races in but the slow and dumb automobiles won . You go mazda with your special olympics and all. Thats like auto x , you know those special race classes for those special type of cars .

REASON why the rotary engines arent reliable. To make hp you need to turn around 8 to 9 thousand rpms , since the pereodic table hasnt changed in the last 10 million years i guess they cant make it last long pulling those types of rpms. This is why the Corvette dominates lemans. The V8 LS motors turn less rpms there for the motors are more reliable due to less wear and tear. This is whats also wrong with enzo theory his race four cylinder cars and v12s they all turned high numbers of rpms which in turn cuased shorten engine life. Jaguar who competes against Corvette with there v10 runs into the same engine issues. This reduction of rpms Is also a reason the the corvettes are getting better mpg than any other car in lemans also.
