Sept. 2005
I know there was a 1st gen dsm, and a turbo dodge omni. That's all I know for sure.
I've been looking for this issue also. I've searched my house up and down ,and can't find it ANYWHERE. It pisses me off when I think about it.
THANKS

The other cars were Hasport's CRX with an H22 shoehorned in (which they had a hybrid how-to article about), a ~400hp 4G63T-powered Mitsu Mirage Turbo hatchback, and an SR20DET-powered S13 hacthback (which was also featured in the Feb. 2007 issue of Grasroots Motorsports). That issue had a price breakdown on how to build your car to a similar spec to the featured car's.

Hmmm...
For road racing you pretty much stick with the lightest chassis you can reliably run on track...
Power to weight ratio is what drag is all about...
With both types some considerations have to be made for ease of modifications for the types of events it will run in...
If you are into engine swaps... then the Datsun 240/260/280 Z (S-30) cars are some of the best candidates... They are lighter than anything put on the road in the last 20 years... and they have hoods the size of soccer fields... RB26DETT, BMW V12, Chevy small block, Ford small block, and *** near anything else ever put on the road... You can stand on the ground between the radiator and the belts of a Chevy small block in a 240Z... All of the trannys fit well... T56 6 speed, ZF, World Class T5s, Late model Nissan, etc... And the shifter locates in the stock hole with ANY of the swaps...
A small block Chevy putting down 400 reliable, instantaneous horses with lightweight aluminum components actually WEIGHS LESS THAN the original 150HP Nissan L-6 engine(which is no slouch with mods)... The Chevy engine places the weight further back and lower in the chassis... many of the swap kits are designed to maximise this improvement in balance...
Front brakes from late model Toyota 4x4 trucks fit the front spindles and large 11.5" vented rotors from a 300ZX fit with some inexpensive spacers... Rear brakes can be easily converted to disks with junk parts from late model nissan cars... These parts can be BOLTED onto the 30 year old rear spindles(E-Brake cables connect as original)...
There are dozens of strut options... it is relatively easy to modify the original struts to use custom valved cartridges in shorter lengths(for more travel on a lowered car)...
The original Datsun driveline is all Hitachi... Late model Subaru LSD rear ends bolt in... Late model Infinity and Z32 rear ends are easily retrofitted... CV axles from later models are easily adapted... There are several 400+HP Datsuns regularly drag racing with STOCK drivelines... The little cars were built with aome kind of MANIC intent on making them BULLETPROOF... if not RUSTPROOF...
Check out some track event Time Trials scores... look for Datsuns in the modifieds or SPO classes... They are likely V-8 hybrids.. and they usually walk away with Fastest Times of the Day...
I am working on my own SUPER DATSUN... FULL RACE... ready this summer...

My favorite issues are the ones that have the real-world builds. (For the rest of us.... that don't have Daddy's mint).

A correction to my last post (it won't let me edit it anymore): The 240SX was featured in the Dec. 2006 issue of GRM, not Feb. 2007.
