my car is a 1979 Rx7. the car is pretty much mint in all ways except for the Carbed 12A (points ignition). The engine smokes above 3000rpm and its a carbed rotary so it sounds like *** also the ignition is arcaic. im tired of replacing seals and *** in this engine every 60-70k miles so an engine swap is needed. My first choice is a GM LS1 or LS6, but those are a bit expensive. what kind of options do i have as far as FR engines. My requirements are as follows. .Lightweight (no iron block V8s) .relativly inexpensive .decent aftermarket support .more than 100bhp .not a rotary
any ideas?

i have seen everything from sr20det motors to the Chevy ls1, we have a saying around here, with enough time, money and knowledge you can do anything.

well, why not a rotory? If you go with a 13B from a later model (does not need to be turbo) it would be more reliable and you would get fuel injection.

to me even the 13b is not that reliable, a rx-7 to me is not a everyday car, if i had one i would have another car just in case the rx-7 didn't want to go, they are way to fussy, especially in cold climates.

I wonder if anyone's ever swapped a Miata engine into an RX-7? It's the same company, and for the Miata engine there's tons of parts. Try looking at dedicated Mazda boards, you may find some Frankensteined RX-7s there.
I was about to suggest looking at what some of the GRM $200X Challenge cars ran, but then I read the lightweight part, which basically nixes that idea. There are lots of RWD Japanese and European tin with American V-8s in the nose in that competition (including V-8 FC3S RX-7s), but those are all old iron-block V-8s out of cars like 5.0L 'Stangs and work vans. You could still look at the fabrication for those cars to get an idea of what's involved in a V-8 swap.

Id be more prepared to see a Miata stuffed with a 13b instead. The miata engine, while stout and with a fair potential, isnt worth the transplant unless the old engine is litterally fused into a single piece of metal.

Hey anyone ever think about the Mazda 3 or 6 motors? For some reason I never hear anyone talking about swapping those motors even in Mazda cars....how bout an LT1 from the older Vettes?

The old MX-3 and MX-6 or the new Mazda3/6?
The old ones were horrible, the new ones arent bad: mazdaspeed has gotten a great power out of the 6.
