I've had a subscription to C&D since 1990. ![]()
I read the article and found it to be rather interesting. I'm not surprised at how well the Evos performed, but I definitely thought that one of the Elises would win.
I was suprised to see that Toyota truck.
For those who have no clue what we're discussing, here's the link to the article. It's a long read, but it's interesting. The latter link is the final results (if you want to skip the article):

Speed and power are a mix of mostly three factors: money, motivation, and time. How fast do you want to go and how broke do you want to be when you get there?

I read the article too and seems either of the Elise's were in the running for first, only both had obstacles holding them back. The Forcefed Elise had some drivetrain/engine problems possibly caused by a claimed "missed shift" and the Hondadata people managed to leave the suspension seriously underworked. Stock spring rates, stock wheels and brakes left it in second.
K20a in an Elise?
And just to sum it up the Evo apparently had 86k in mods. Sounds like enough equipment to make the already killer Evo more wicked.

I think they should have tried to build up the potent 2ZZ-GE than perform a Honda swap. Sure, the K20a is great, but it could easily be argued that the 2ZZ-GE is its equal.
And having $86k in mods on an Evo should be a crime. I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.

I'm with you there. I'd like to know a little more about it, personally. How about that rear suspension swap? I wonder if that's a one-off thing or if there are people out there that do that a lot. Also, while there's no denying that EVOs kick some big-time ass, I'm getting a little tired of seeing them. I'd like to see a little more variety! Sure they're fantastic, but there are other great cars out there too. Anyone agree with me?

1: How about the $86K Evo's 4G63 instead of the K20? Just a thought...
2: Is that Evo even streetable? I would think you'd only spend that much if you were converting it to a race car.

It would totally destroy the balance of that car. Sometimes too much power can be a horribly wrong thing.
Case in point: there's rumors flying that Pontiac has a Solstice mule running around with an LS2 in the nose. That's 400HP/400TQ in a VERY small car. Would you even be able to drive it hard without smoking the tires at every stab of the pedal? Probably not.
Going back to the Elise, I'd say that 300WHP is about the limit for it. Any more than that would just be too much to manage. Hell, 400WHP in my MR2 Turbo is WAY more than I'll ever need!

Here. 400bhp in an Elise. Built by Lotus, no less.

About the Solstice, I figure that with the hefty kerb weight of the damn thing, 400/400 ought to be just about enough

Wow. That would be one insane ride. I wonder if they'll take internal organs as down payment on one? :P

I'd imagine that something north of 125,000$ would see you sitting pretty in one of those, but I may be guessing low...

I'm sure I could easily fetch $50k for a kidney on eBay... I wonder what else I could sell? LOL
