The so called "Z" Engine, high pressure diesel

I was rereading some old issues while on vacation last week and I came across a column on the so called "Z Engine," the diesel engine with the efficiency of a 2 stroke that can make power with every 180 degrees of revolution.  When I got to the part where you explained how the extra cylinder in the engine compresses the air to the stratospheric levels necessary for the Z engine to function, I got a sense of Deja Vu.  I pulled out my copy of Street Supercharging by Pat Ganahl and sure enough he makes mention of a 6 cylinder Hispano Suiza designed by Marc Birkigtt that used 2 out of 6 cylinders to compress the intake charge.  It competed in the Coupe de l'Auto race but was not successful.
So I guess it is true that no matter what you do to your car, someone in another country has done it before (though the idea of using the compressed intake charge to combust a second time is novel).  Just thought your readers might find that historical reference interesting.

The original Vdub, designed by Ferry Porsche, one of it's prototypes was a four cylinder air cooled engine with two of the cylinders supercharging the other two.
