I just would like to pass on that in the July 2006 issue in OffCamber Associate Senior Editor James Tate, brought up the point of having an American Autobahn. I strongly agree with all of the points that were made in this article and would like to pass along this website to everyone. Please everyone go sign this petition it will take 30 seconds of your time.

I won't sign it.. sorry, but I doubt that 90 percent of Americans could handle their car at those sorts of speeds. I will not be part of the inevitable carnage that will follow.
In the UK.. there is a MANDATORY 15 classes you have to take before you can go for your test to get your permit. In Germany getting your license will cost you 3 grand in behind the wheel and theory testing.. here in the us.. two weeks with your father to learn car control skills, a written test, and 5 minutes in a parking lot proving you know how to park your car.

Arthur,
Very true...people here in LA see a fine mist of condensation on their windshields and slam on their brakes. Same crap goes for ANYONE changing their tire on the side of a highway...people just stop. Closest thing we have are toll roads (usually empty!). Or, better yet, Angeles Crest.

Yeah here in the south-west desert it barely rains and for some misterious reason there's like 5 accidents on the freeway and the limit on most parts is around 60 to 70. Plus we're also forgeting the people who think they own the road and the people who play some sort of game of tag on their cars which makes all the more dangerous.
When I went to get my licence I just payed 70 bucks and they even gave me the answers to the test and I just started to drive 2 days before that!

If you've ever driven in New England, you'll realize quickly why the government hasn't made an Autobahn.

Exceeding the speed limit could be limited to those that can pass a training course and have there car inspected. Similar to what they do at the track. Those that pass will get a special plate and only the person that passed the test can drive that car. exceeding the speed limit could only apply to highways, interstates and toll roads. The state would make money from the training, inspection and the plates. The handgun permit works like this. If you pass the requirements set forth by the state you can carry a handgun. Driving fast could be set up the same, there are restrictions with any program.

That would be all good, but you would have to build a whole different stretch of highways, interstates, and toll ways. Which would cost way more than training, inspections, and all the bull...... It will not happen, and should not happen. The roads are dangerous enough.
I do believe that everybody should do at least one SCCA autocross event, and learn how to drive a stick.

Use the same highways. The different plates would allow you to exceed the speed limit. Each driver would have the responsibility to decide when to exceed the limit dependent on the current conditions. It is this way with the CHL that allows you to carry a gun. The person has to decide based on the law and circumstances that they are in to use the gun or not. Just being able to speed does not mean it has to be done all the time.

You know, I have noticed something of recent. I am sure many of you have seen the ever increasing numbers of "shrines" on the sides of the road where somebody died..
Well, I noticed that most of them seem to be on the straights, not the corners or even the slight curves.. but on dead straight sections of road.
Disturbing really

yeah what's that about. I'd expect there to be more on the sharp curves or the intersections, but they're on the straights. Well the ammount of shrines might not the the point of location, but if they were wearing their seat belts.

Most of the ones I see down here are close to intersections. If I were to guess it would be falling asleep or DUI or both. Seat belts are a good point. I used mine before we had the law. Most of the riders in my car put them on too after the first or second turn.
